1/18 McLaren MP4/6 Japan GP
The McLaren MP4/6 was the iconic Formula 1 car McLaren campaigned during the 1991 season, designed by Neil Oatley and powered by the Honda RA121E V12 engine. It was driven by reigning World Champion Ayrton Senna and Austria's Gerhard Berger. The new V12 unit was longer, heavier and thirstier than the V10s powering many rivals, but produced around 720 bhp. The MP4/6 holds the distinction of being the last F1 car to win the championship with a manual gearbox, and the only V12-powered car ever to claim the title. At the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, the race proved to be a landmark moment. The nose section was extended by 8 cm specifically for the Japanese GP as a measure to improve aerodynamics, which dramatically improved performance. Gerhard Berger won the race, while Senna finished second — securing his third drivers' championship title and a drivers' and constructors' double for the fourth consecutive year. It remains one of the most celebrated cars in F1 history, forever associated with Senna's brilliance and McLaren-Honda's golden era.
